The oldest of the photos taken by the Mangelsdorfs in Hawaii are in the form of plates to be viewed on a wooden stereoscope as pictured. Sadly the 3D effect created by the two off-set photos and the viewer lenses is lost when the photos are digitized.
The goat and bathrobe pictured here were much loved by John E. Mangelsdorf—shown here with his sister, Linda, and their mother, Celeste. This photo was taken at the Mangelsdorf’s first Oʻahu home in Manoa Valley.

This is fascinating! I am a Mangelsdorf so it’s very interesting to read about my past relatives. I’ve heard so much about the Mangelsdorf seed company. My great grandfather was Paul Mangelsdorf.

Just replying to say Hey! And …… Would you kindly state your Branch/lineage on The Mangelsdorf (Atchison, Ks) Tree?
If Paul Christoph Mangelsdorf (married to Helen Parker) was your great grandfather (1899-1989) , then you are either Paul Christoph Jr’s or Clark Parker’s descendant ….. Sadly The Mangelsdorf Tree, to my knowledge, has not been updated/added on to since the first few children born to the 3rd generation. With the passing of the 3rd generation, I have no idea who “The Family Baton” was passed to and if the Family Tree continues to be updated?….. Nor who is in charge of The Family Tree?….. AND would be most interested in you have knowledge of this as I am 4th generation(with (Ernst August being 1st generation) and have 2 generations below me alive.
Your great-grandfather Paul (one of my grandfather’s younger brothers along with Alfred of Hawaii) was renowned & considered ‘The Father of Modern Corn’!
You must have a copy of what was called ‘The First Family’?
I’m not sure, obviously, how much ‘Mangelsdorf Family History’ you have, or what you have (The First Family, photographs, etc) or the extent of your interest?…… For me, I am deeply interested and try to get copies of all I can find from willing “relatives” regarding The Mangelsdorf Family & Seed Company – from Anna Dorthea who being widowed brought her 5 children (Our common ancestor would be Ernst August Mangelsdorf- my great grandfather Your great great grandfather) from Stendal, Prussia, who sailed aboard the DH Watjen, coming up the Mississippi River and first settling in Hermann, Missouri…… TO present day Mangelsdorf’s. Unfortunately and sadly, I had an extensive collection including Original Mangelsdorf Seed Co wooden display box, wooden hanger from The Mangelsdorf Opera House, Ellinwood, KS, many original photographs & negatives passed to me from my father that were all lost in a total loss house fire in 2010….. and I’m still trying to recreate my Family treasures 15 years later.
I am (Ernst) August Mangelsdorf/Friedrich Wilhelm Mangelsdorf/Arthur ‘Bud’ Charles Mangelsdorf/Linda M Mangelsdorf-Oshel.

Hello Linda. Thank you for posting and it’s good to meet you. I’m co-contributor, Rachel. The other contributor is John P. Mangelsdorf, grandson of Albert J. Mangelsdorf, son of Ernst August, co-founder of The Mangelsdorf Seed Company. Whew, it’s quite a mouthful!
Albert J. is Paul C.s older brother.
When we have time, we’ll post some of the family tree.
I’m so sad and sorry to hear of your loss of family treasures to a fire.
Please do stay in touch.

Hello Sarah – co-contributor, Rachel here. Thank you for commenting. We have so many letters and photos to review. Paul Christopher is frequently mentioned and knowing you are out there, I’ll try to get to some of his memorabilia and post it. This incredible family has so many branches and so much American history.
So far I’ve learned that Paul Christoper is the third child of Ernst August’s with his second wife Mary.
Anyway, John P. Mangelsdorf and I are best friends and have a business together. Client work comes first – this blog is for fun and relaxation when work is done. Posts and comments will likely come slowly. Unless we win the lottery and can just play all day!

Hello Sarah, Thanks for commenting. We’ve a lot of info relating to Paul Mangelsdorf. Sigh – if only we had all the time in the world to post! Trying to do one post a week.
